Norfolk city officials and developers broke ground for the new Ghent Station Monday.
The shopping center will be anchored by The Fresh Market grocery store and will also contain a Bon Secours Medical Facility. Norfolk city leaders, including Mayor Paul Fraim, who were on hand for the groundbreaking say they hope other businesses will follow.
The site is located on 3.5 acres on 21st Street between Colley Avenue and Hampton Boulevard. It is the former site of the Norfolk Senior Center and the old buildings have already been bulldozed.
Officials hope Norfolk’s first Fresh Market will be open by Thanksgiving.
